Missions Walk December 2020
December 2020: His Eyes
Let's take a walk south of the border, in Honduras! One of the foreign missions supported by SHCC is “His Eyes.” Missionaries Felipe and Valerie Colby operate out of Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras. They oversee a mission where Valerie, an Optometrist, provides optometry services while Felipe oversees a myriad of other areas. Missions such as this provide a holistic approach. They provide support for the whole person. Taking into consideration their physical, emotional, social and spiritual well being.
SHCC has taken 2 mission trips in the past to see and experience first hand how His Eyes takes care of the people while bringing the gospel. Their service to the people includes optometry, dental and medical services (that are either hard to get or the quality is lacking) in Honduras. His Eyes coordinates handing out clothing (provided by Master Provisions, another SHCC supported mission, more on them later) with shoes being especially in demand. They also oversee a coffee plantation providing jobs and income by selling “Hill Climber Coffee.” Many of you have bought and been able to enjoy their coffee. During the SHCC mission trip to His Eyes, we got to observe and participate in the Milk Project, another program they oversee for children. This started off as a project to provide milk to kids and has expanded to providing them a meal (many often don't get good meals daily). During their time at the Milk Project they also learn Bible stories, do crafts, and learn life skills. These children can be sponsored for only $38 a month (see me, Rexanne Willis, if you're interested). This ensures your child gets the food, clothes, etc., they lack. You will also receive updates periodically, often in the form of a handwritten letter (translated) from your child.
Currently, His Eyes has had additional demands due to Hurricane Eta that struck Honduras the first of November causing significant damage in the country. Many people have had homes damaged and are living in shelters. His Eyes has helped to distribute donated mattresses and to provide medical care. In one day, they expected to see 400 patients before the end of the day. They have also had to clear landslides on roads leading to the coffee plantation.
Sound like a lot. It is! Pray for the Colby's as they persevere in living and bringing the Gospel to Honduras. It's a stressful and demanding mission that they selflessly give of themselves.
